AFRAKUMA BANNERMAN
BA Hons.
Fine Art Painter;
Analytical Psychologist, Divination, Dream Consultant.
Afrakuma Bannerman has had recognition from several reputable critics such as: The Sunday Times, London; Ghana Times; Africa Woman Magazine; Swedish Afton Bladet; West African News Magazine and Nigerian Herald… She has many works in public and private collections.
“Her paintings are delicate works, elusive in meaning and not at all what you’d expect…”
Atticus, Sunday Times, London.
“Afrakuma Bannerman’s works are as rewarding close-up as at a distance…”
Arts Review.
It is seldom that artists from Africa are given exhibitions in London unless their work is demonstrably “African” –as though the artistic talent conformed (or, even, should try to conform) to national or continental barriers.
The works of Afrakuma Bannerman are not “African” in any sense that it is different to the art of anyone else. Her paintings are subtle, delicate & very good, and, as any good craftsman should, she has drawn upon all the influences of her life to project her talent.
Part of the influence on her, of course, has been birth and childhood in Ghana, but then so has her schooling in Malvern and life in England helped to mould her purposes and her character. She had a most remarkably good foundation at Malvern Girls' College in Worcestershire. If Accra is “African”, then by any standard Malvern is “English”…
Afrakuma Bannerman is as African as she is English, and her work is international in its quality and appeal. She transcends nationality, religion & sex. This vital Art display of her endeavours will prove the breadth of her talent and of her output. Her works includes enamels on steel, and oils on paper and on canvas.
The fact that Afrakuma Bannerman is Ghanaian is important, and her works should make all who come from the African continent especially proud of her- but the real importance is that it gives everyone from everywhere an opportunity to witness & value an exciting new and brilliant talent.
